Description

1882 Twenty, Sharply Defined AU Details Coin
Rare in All Grades

1882 $20 -- Rim Damage -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Other than the 1861 Paquet, the 1882 twenty is the lowest circulation-strike double eagle. Only 571 pieces were struck and few were saved. The PCGS website suggests 25 to 35 examples known. While the present AU Details specimen is not included in the population report, which lists just 18 coins, eight in AU grades and three in Mint State, one can get a general idea of approximately where this particular piece might fit in the grading continuum.

The bright yellow-gold surfaces exhibit sharply struck design elements, including boldness in the star radials and Liberty's hair strands. Numerous light marks appear under magnification, and occasional fine file marks are visible on the rims. Nevertheless, these are not all that bad, and should not intimidate the prospective bidder. Examples of this rare issue surface very infrequently.
