Description:

1882-CC Double Eagle, MS61
Scarce Issue in Mint State
1882-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-B. The 1882-CC Liberty Head double eagle enjoyed a mintage of 39,140 pieces, with two varieties known for the date. Noted gold specialist Doug Winter suggests perhaps 800-900 examples survive today in all grades, with 30-35 specimens in Mint State.
The present coin is a representative of Variety 2-B, with a leaning mintmark and the first C lower than the second. This piece is from a late state of the die, with a die crack that nearly encircles the reverse, running through the top of the letters in the legend and the denomination. This attractive Mint State example is sharply struck, with pleasing greenish-gold surfaces that show remarkably few abrasions for an MS61 coin. The vivid color combines with vibrant mint luster to produce outstanding eye appeal. Population: 26 in 61, 17 finer (9/10).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26BF, PCGS# 8997)
