Description:
Elusive Select 1887-S Double Eagle
1887-S $20 MS63 PCGS. The years 1886 and 1887 mark an unusual period in the history of the double eagle: first San Francisco coined no business strikes in the former year, then Philadelphia returned the favor in the latter. The 1887-S twenty has a depressed mintage relative to most Type Three San Francisco twenties, though it is still readily available in grades through MS62. Select coins are borderline condition rarities, however, and this is an attractive example with excellent detail. Two shallow scrapes at Liberty's throat contribute to the grade. PCGS has certified just five coins finer (9/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26BS, PCGS# 9007)
