1893-S Double Eagle, A Lustrous, Near-Gem Specimen1893-S $20 MS64 NGC. The 1893-S is similar to the 1892-S in overall rarity and is comparable in Uncirculated grades up to and including MS63. In MS64, the 1893-S is very rare and we have never seen a Gem. What tends to distinguish 1893-S Double Eagles are the extensive abrasions seen on most examples.
Such is clearly not the case with this coin as the surfaces are exceptionally clean and show none of the usual heavy bagmarks. The mint luster is bright and coruscates around each side in typical S-mint fashion. Not quite as sharply struck as many examples, but this is hardly a detracting feature. There is a distinctive spot of grease (as struck) by star 4 that would serve as a reliable pedigree identifier in the future.
The NGC MS64 in the Eagle Collection is among the finest 1893-S Double Eagles to be sold at auction in years and is probably exceeded among recent offerings only by the Dallas Bank Collection: 119 coin, cataloged as "Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, near Gem" that realized $12,650.
