Description:

1894 Twenty Dollar, MS65
Condition Rarity, In-Demand Type
1894 $20 MS65 PCGS. Gem Liberty Head double eagles, relatively speaking, are many, many times rarer than the Saint-Gaudens twenties; collectors eagerly stretch to acquire nice examples at auction. The sole exception to this conditional rarity is, of course, the ultracommon 1904 date, which currently comprises about 80% of the 5,500 or so Liberty Head Type Three examples at PCGS. Nonetheless, PCGS has seen nearly 100,000 submissions at the Gem grade of the Saint-Gaudens With Motto type, all dates -- about 18 times more than the Liberty Head Type Threes.

This Gem 1894 Liberty Head thus emerges as a conditional rarity for the type and the date -- but it is also a mighty attractive coin in its own right. Deep, thorough mint bloom radiates from each side, the surfaces a mellow reddish-orange and every bit as unperturbed as the grade suggests. The surprisingly bold strike has produced full star centrils around the obverse periphery, and good articulation of Liberty's hair details. On the reverse, all of the fine detailing in the glory of rays, the eagle's feathers, and the shield stripes are equally well brought up. A great type coin. Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (5/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26CB, PCGS# 9025)
