Description

Low-Mintage 1902 Double Eagle, MS64

1902 $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1902 twenty had a mintage of just 31,140 pieces, a remarkably low figure compared to the millions of pieces posted by other dates. Unsurprisingly, examples are scarce in nearly all grades. Most Mint State survivors grade MS61 or 62, and the population drops precipitously at the MS63 level. In Choice Mint State (MS64), NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 10 pieces, and just one finer example is known, a PCGS coin (3/12). The surfaces have a nearly uniform orange-gold color, though close inspection reveals occasional streaks of lilac. The strike is bold throughout, and only a few shallow abrasions on Liberty's cheek keep this piece from an even higher grade. Housed in a green label holder.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26CU, PCGS# 9041)
