Important 1838 AU 58 Gobrecht Ten Dollar1838 $10 AU 58 NGC. After two Congressional acts altered the weight and fineness of gold coins in the 1830s in an effort to discourage hoarding, the mint ended what had become a 34-year hiatus of the ten dollar denomination in 1838. Only 7,200 business strikes were issued of Christian Gobrecht's distinctive design, one that is often unfairly grouped with other Coronet eagles of the No Motto type. Precious few examples survive today, and those that do surface are usually well circulated. This is a lustrous yellow-gold coin with bold features except for diagnostic softness on the obverse stars. Any offering of this classic, undeniably rare gold type coin is sure to elicit a slew of prospective bidders. Population: 2 in 58, 2 finer (7/00).
