1839 $10 LG LETTERS
Scarce 1839 Large Letters Eagle, Near-Mint Preservation1839 $10 Large Letters AU 55 PCGS. The Large Letters and Small Letters nomenclature that many numismatists use in connection with the 1839 eagles hardly does justice to the two varieties of the year. In actuality, Christian Gobrecht's original obverse motif of 1838 differs markedly from the design that appears on his eagles starting with the 1839 Small Letters. Since type collectors who desire an example of Gobrecht's 'Type One' Coronet eagle traditionally gravitate toward extant 1838 representatives, the 1839 Large Letters has been overlooked by all but the most knowledgeable gold specialists despite its scarcity and conditionally challenging status. With trivial wear and remarkably smooth surfaces, the present lot offers a fleeting opportunity for attentive bidders. The sharply struck focal features contrast nicely with the moderately glassy fields. Ample remaining luster and rich orange-gold coloration round out the splendid illustration that this near-Mint example presents. Population: 6 in 55, 13 finer (10/99).
