Description

Almost Uncirculated 1839 Type of 1840 Ten Dollar, AU50

1839 $10 Type of 1840 AU50 PCGS. Also known as the Small Letters type, this is a separate type altogether and much scarcer than the Large Letters type. Only 12,447 pieces were struck and examples are rare in any grade with most survivors grouped in the VF-XF grade range. This is the first example we have offered in any grade at public auction since our 1998 FUN Sale. Just a bit weakly defined around the peripheral stars on the obverse, the remainder of the coin is sharply defined. The bright surfaces retain a small portion of original mint luster around the devices, and the only mark of any note is a short vertical abrasion to the right of the eagle's head on the reverse. (NGC ID# 54XJ, PCGS# 8580)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
