Description:

1839 Eagle, Type of 1838, AU58
Two-Year Design Type
1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters AU58 NGC. The Liberty Head eagles by Christian Gobrecht debuted in 1838 with the new design carried over to some 1839-dated pieces. The 1839-dated pieces showing the 1838-style head are also called Large Letters, while the later pieces are called Type of 1840 or Small Letters. In point of fact, though, the size difference in the letters is minuscule; the Type of 1840 is actually an entirely different type that shows many variations from the Type of 1838. Chief among them are the mostly covered ear on the Type of 1838 -- it is uncovered on the Type of 1840 -- and a much sharper rear bust truncation that is over star 13 on the Type of 1838. As expected, this piece shows just a touch of high-point rub on Liberty's cheek and the reverse devices. Generous mint luster remains over rich reddish-gold surfaces with lots of eye appeal. A few scattered ticks are consistent with a short spell in circulation. Census: 27 in 58, 16 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 262E, PCGS# 8576)
