Description:
1839 Eagle, Type of 1840, AU58
Prooflike Reflectivity Remaining
1839 $10 Type of 1840, Small Letters AU58 NGC. The redesigned Type of 1840 Liberty Head can be distinguished by the less-pointed rear on the bust truncation, and star 10 appearing between the folds of the hair bun, rather than star 9 as on the Type of 1838, also called Large Letters. The Philadelphia Mint made about twice as many Type of 1838 eagles in 1839 as of the later Type of 1840, which saw only 12,447 pieces reported struck. Most examples seem to have circulated rather heavily, making this near-Mint coin a standout example. Light field chatter covers both sides of this medium-gold piece, but there are no singular marks, and generous luster yields to some prooflike reflectivity remaining in the protected areas. The strike is quite well-executed throughout both sides. Census: 6 in 58, 1 finer (1/14).
