Bass 1839 Type of 1840 Small Letters Eagle AU581839 $10 Type of 1840, Small Letters AU58 PCGS. Ex: Bass. The Small Letters Type of 1840 variety is easily distinguished from the Large Letters Type of 1838 variety because on this type the bust truncation is to the south of star 13, whereas on the Type of 1838 it is to the north. This lustrous, medium gold example has a light peripheral die crack that runs near or through all stars from 1 to 10. The fields show myriad light abrasions, individually visible only under a loupe, that impart a somewhat satiny appearance to the fields. The strike is pleasingly bold through the centers, with notable weakness only through most of the peripheral stars. PCGS has graded only two examples at the AU58 grade level, with one finer (4/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 262F, PCGS# 8580)
