Choice XF 1839 Eagle - Type of 18401839 $10 Type of 1840 XF45 NGC. Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht introduced the Coronet Eagle design in 1838, but it differed in several ways from the more familiar Type of 1840. Gobrecht reduced the curve of the bust truncation, and revealed the ear lobe of Liberty. The modified design was first issued in 1839, and has a script 8 in the date. This pleasing coin has ample peripheral luster, only light wear on the devices, and is without any mentionable abrasions. A perhaps underappreciated rarity, as NGC has graded only 25 examples. Just 12,447 pieces were struck, and most of the handful of survivors are in XF and AU grades. Population: 5 in 45, 12 finer (7/02). (NGC ID# 262F, PCGS# 8580)
