Pretty and 'Special' AU58 Eagle1842-O $10 AU58 PCGS. If only all 1840s O-mint eagles looked like this one! At first glance the coin almost appears to be a proof, with remarkably clean fields and crisply executed, frosty design details. Examination with a loupe, of course, reveals a few light hairlines and field chatter, as well as trace evidence of highpoint rub, all of which confirm its status as a lightly circulated business strike. However, that same examination also confirms the full strike (not a term this cataloger tosses around lightly), with the sole exception of two small, unstruck areas on the center highpoints that would have been among the deepest recesses of the die: one on Liberty's upper lip, a second in the hair above the coronet. The color is a pretty, medium yellow-gold--and the eye appeal is enormous. One for a connoisseur's collection. Confirming this piece's conditional rarity, PCGS has graded only one other coin in AU58, with one finer (3/06).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 262N, PCGS# 8587)
