1848 $10 AU58 PCGS....
1848 $10 AU58 PCGS. Eureka! This eagle, the largest circulating gold denomination at the time, was minted in the year that James Marshall and Peter Wimmer discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, under construction on the American River in California. From 1848 to 1849, the total number of eagles manufactured in Philadelphia and New Orleans would increase nearly fourfold. Light high-point rub fails to diminish the appeal or the luster on this charming piece, which is well but not fully struck. A small scrape appears on Liberty's neck, with a few scattered contact marks elsewhere. Population: 10 in 58, 9 finer (8/11).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 2633, PCGS# 8599)
