Rare AU55 1848-O Eagle1848-O $10 AU55 PCGS. Olive-gold surfaces with wisps of satiny luster still visible around the stars, letters, numerals, and central devices. The desirability of the issue is belied by the moderate mintage of 35,850 pieces because comparatively few survivors can be found above the XF grade classification. Back in 1980 David Akers, who pioneered research on the condition rarities in the U.S. gold coinage series, wrote as follows about the 1848-O: "I have only seen two Uncirculated pieces and perhaps five or six AU's." The importance of the 1848-O as a condition rarity in grades higher than XF continues to be attested and celebrated by 21st-century numismatists. Population: 4 in 55, 8 finer (3/05).(#8600) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2634, PCGS# 8600)
