Description:
Low Mintage 1848-O Liberty Eagle, Rare Mint State Preservation
1848-O $10 MS61 NGC. Normal Shield variety. This coin was previously offered as lot 7743 in our May 2000 Central States Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "The 1848-O Eagle, one of just 35,850 pieces struck at the New Orleans facility, after record production the year before, is an elusive and often overlooked issue in all grades and can be considered extremely scarce at the AU level. Only a handful of Mint State pieces are known. Both sides of this lustrous example display a mixture of the natural green-gold alloy and reddish patina, with moderate scuffiness in the fields. The highpoints of the obverse are somewhat ill-defined, as are most known examples of this issue, while the reverse is sharper than usual. An important No Motto Eagle for the Southern gold specialist." The coin realized $8,625. Population: 2 in 61, with a mere three finer (10/02).
