Prooflike 1849 Doubled Date Eagle1849 $10 MS62 PCGS. Breen-6887. Doubled Date. Walter Breen recorded several different varieties for the 1849 Eagle coinage, including a repunched date and an overdate. The two varieties are extremely similar in their date layout and repunching. The most prominent doubling on this example is a little below and left of the final position on the 8 and the 9. This specimen is an extremely important example for three different reasons. First, the date is sharply doubled below and left of the final position, the very rare Doubled Date variety according to Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia. Second, it is strictly Mint State, a quality that is extremely rare, especially when better than the basic MS60 grade level. Third, it is full prooflike on both sides with frosty yellow gold surfaces and excellent contrast.(#8601) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2635, PCGS# 8601)
