Description

Probable Finest Known 1850 Small Date

1850 Small Date MS 61 PCGS. A third example of this scarce variety. This is the coin Warren Miller considered his primary 1850 Small Date. The VF 30 above was more of a curiosity because of the heavy obverse die crack, and the AU 50 belongs to a different consignor. This is the finest example certified of this scarce date type, and it is most likely also the finest known. This is a bright coin with good mint luster. The striking details are less than complete, but the coin could not be considered "weakly struck." Numerous abrasions are peppered across each side, as one might expect from the grade, but only a few could be considered distinctive. An angling scratch is noted across the face the Liberty, but one has to tilt the coin just so to see it. A darker spot is seen at the denticles by star 10, and another spot is also seen above the N in TEN. (NGC ID# 2638, PCGS# 8604)
