1850 $10 Small Date MS61 NGC....
Condition Census 1850 Small Date Eagle, MS611850 $10 Small Date MS61 NGC. Despite the distinctiveness and comparatively low population of the 1850 Small Date eagle, this variety has not achieved the prominence of other alternative-size date variants. Both the Small Date and Large Date have had numerous appearances at auction, and it was not until the advent of certification that collectors realized the comparative scarcity of the Small Date version.
This lovely example, well-defined in the centers with softness at the stars, has lovely yellow-gold color with a hint of orange and a few small copper spots at the obverse periphery. The strongly lustrous fields have a slightly hazy appearance, though this is a minor concern. Wispy abrasions on the reverse define the grade, though the obverse has a finer appearance. The conditionally rare nature of the variety in Mint State is clear; this piece is tied for the finest certified at NGC, with just one finer at PCGS (6/07).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2638, PCGS# 8604)
