Description

About Uncirculated 1855-O Ten Dollar, An Overlooked Rarity

1855-O $10 AU50 PCGS. It has been exactly one year since we last offered an 1855-O Liberty Eagle in any grade. Coincidentally, the coin that sold as lot 8245 in our January 2002 FUN Signature Sale was also graded AU50, albeit by ANACS. The present example retains some evidence of a semi-prooflike finish, although this feature is only readily evident at direct angles. The outward appearance is one of orange-gold color with green-gold shades in evidence as the surfaces rotate under the light. The overall definition is typical for the issue, but the central features are relatively bold despite some incompleteness of strike and light rub. Although not widely recognized as such, the '55-O is a significant rarity among O-mint gold coinage with just 18,000 pieces produced. The typical grade among survivors is VF. (NGC ID# 263M, PCGS# 8617)
