Possibly Unique Mint State 1855-O Eagle1855-0 $10 MS 61 PCGS. Normal Date. Sharply struck and quite attractive with undisturbed satiny luster below a touch of pale orange-gold color. The surfaces are almost entirely free of marks, and a few faint hairlines can be seen with magnification. Easily the finest 1855-O eagle we have seen and quite possibly the finest known. One of the most important eagles in this superb collection.
The 1855-O eagle is a rare, underrated issue. There are fewer than 100 pieces known from the original mintage of 18,000 and most survivors are in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine grade range. Approximately a dozen AU pieces are known and just a small number of these grade better than AU 50. There are currently two MS 61 1855-O eagles listed in the PCGS Population Report. We have never seen the other and are not certain if this listing does not represent a resubmission of the Acadiana collection specimen. If this is the case, then the presently offered coin is unique in Mint State.
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection; obtained via private treaty from Doug Winter in 1996; earlier Ex: RARCOA; Martin Paul; Ed Milas Collection; and said to earlier be from the Farouk collection. (NGC ID# 263M, PCGS# 8617)
