High Grade 1858-S Ten Dollar1858-S $10 AU55 NGC. A rare date with a low mintage of 11,800 pieces, since the San Francisco Mint during this era concentrated on double eagle production. Banks preferred the larger denomination for reserves, and pieces were needed in circulation, particularly on the West Coast. Neither NGC nor PCGS has certified an Uncirculated example. The present piece has a good strike and hints of rose patina. Substantial mint luster illuminates the borders. A mark at the base of Liberty's bust provides the only relevant contact. Census: 13 in 55, 11 finer (8/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 263Y, PCGS# 8627)
