Seldom-Seen Choice XF 1858-S Ten1858-S $10 XF45 PCGS. In the early years of the San Francisco Mint, the facility concentrated on double eagle production, which was preferred by bankers and exporters. High denominations also made it easier for the poorly funded branch mint to coin bullion. Thus the 1858-S eagle was limited to 11,800 pieces, yet none were saved, since neither PCGS nor NGC has graded any as Mint State. This example is sharply defined, moderately abraded, and has substantial luster for the XF45 level. Population: 9 in 45, 14 finer (5/09).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 263Y, PCGS# 8627)
