Description:
Extremely Scarce 1859-O Coronet Eagle AU53
1859-O $10 AU53 NGC. The 1859-O Ten Dollar, one of a mere 2,300 pieces minted, is considered by several leading experts in dated gold to be the premier rarity among O-mint Eagles. This honor is not clear-cut as the 1883-O, which has an even more impressive mintage of 800 coins, is an extremely challenging coin in its own right. Perhaps less than two dozens examples of the 1859-O are extant in AU grades and none are reported at the Mint State level.
This impressive example is typically prooflike with excellent sharpness over the major design elements, but a trifle flat on several of the obverse stars (also typical). An appealing reddish patina has formed over both sides and nicely compliments the green-gold alloy. Surface marks are not only very light, but widely scattered and inoffensive. Needless to say, an important coin for the serious collector of Southern gold. Population: 5 in 53, 8 finer (5/05).(#8629) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2642, PCGS# 8629)

If my clients were to auction something of significance, having Mike as the auctioneer would be a deal maker as far as I am concerned.
