Description:
Lustrous 1859-O Eagle
1859-O $10 AU58 NGC. Several rare date gold specialists, including Akers and Winter, have asserted that the 1859-O is the rarest New Orleans Eagle. Among O-mint issues, the mintage of 2,300 pieces is undercut by only the 1879-O and 1883-O; these two Motto dates clearly have a higher survival rate. The appearance of any 1859-O Eagle is important, however, the present piece grades Borderline Uncirculated and is tied with one other piece as the finest certified for the issue. The major devices are well struck, some stars are not completely impressed. The radiant yellow-gold surfaces are lightly marked, a few short blemishes in the obverse field at 11:30 and 3 o'clock are of little consequence. Interestingly, the lower loop of the 9 in the date has a faint curved die line that perhaps represents a repunched digit. Population: 2 in 58, 0 finer (10/05).(#8629) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2642, PCGS# 8629)
