Rarely Seen 1863-S Eagle XF451863-S $10 XF45 PCGS. A Civil War issue, although the battlefields were distant from the San Francisco Mint. Striking softness is limited to the eagle's neck. Luster is extensive for the grade, and the cloudy lemon-tinged surfaces are only moderately abraded. Just 10,000 pieces were struck, a token production in comparison with the 966,570 Double Eagles struck at the facility the same year, the larger denomination more convenient for bank reserves. More rare than even the low mintage implies, since no one collected Eagles by date and mintmark prior to the 20th century. Population: 6 in 45, 10 finer (11/05).
