1864 $10 XF45 PCGS....
Rare 1864 Eagle, Choice XF1864 $10 XF45 PCGS. A great rarity and an unintended consequence of the Civil War. Like most gold coinage of the conflict, pieces were hoarded or exported when encountered, and mintages plummeted during the five years of the war. The Mint produced 3,530 business strikes, and even the Smithsonian lacks a circulation strike of the issue. Most certified survivors are about the grade of the present piece, Choice XF or so. Yellow-gold surfaces are imbued with traces of light tan, and reveal hints of luster in some of the protected areas. Sharp detail, save for minor softness in portions of Liberty's hair. Light contacts are evenly distributed over each side.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 264D, PCGS# 8639)
