Very Rare 1864-S Ten Dollar1864-S $10 -- Reverse Damage, Scratches -- NGC Details. AU. The Liberty ten dollar series has more than its share of rare issues, particularly prior to 1879, when large numbers of eagles began to accumulate in European bank vaults as payments for foreign trade. The rarest business issue is, of course, the 1875 with a mintage of 100 pieces. The second rarest is neither the 1870-CC nor the 1883-O. It is the 1864-S. None have appeared in a Heritage Signature auction since August 2000. The NGC Census lists just seven pieces in all grades. Though the typical example costs tens of thousands of dollars, the present piece is much more affordable. The straw-gold surfaces are cleaned, and a horizontal pinscratch is above the eagle. The obverse rim is filed near a bump at 9 o'clock. The reverse has rim roughness near 5 o'clock and 7:30. But the opportunity to acquire any 1864-S is fleeting, especially for less than the cost of a new Chevy Volt.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 264E, PCGS# 8640)
