Description:
Rare 1864-S Eagle
1864-S XF 40 PCGS. An extremely rare Coronet ten that is even more elusive than its mintage of 2,500 pieces would suggest. Breen estimates that only 10-12 coins are known. In Akers' survey done some years ago, the 1864-S was tied for first place in the entire series in rarity according to average grade and was second in rarity according to frequency of appearance. This piece shows even wear on the obverse, with weakly defined neck feathers on the eagle, as always. Minimally abraded; in fact, almost "perfect" for the grade. (NGC ID# 264E, PCGS# 8640)
