1865-S $10 865 Over Inverted 186 AU58 NGC....
One of the Finest Known 1865/186-S Inverted Date Eagles1865-S $10 865 Over Inverted 186 AU58 NGC. An extremely high grade for this very popular issue, and this coin is arguably the second finest known of this issue. The fields show ample luster and the surfaces are attractive for the grade. Not that well struck at the centers, with some weakness around Liberty's ear and on the eagle's neck and wings, but the claws are sharp. The inverted date is very clear with a glass, particularly so on the upside down 1 underneath the 5. On later die states the inverted date feature fades, probably from die lapping. Further evidence that this is an early die state is the long thin die scratch in the field above the left wing of the eagle toward the right side of the first S in STATES. The S mintmark is almost comically large when compared with later or earlier versions, obviously the San Francisco Mint wanted to be noticed in this particular year. With a mintage of 16,700 pieces, very few are found in high grades, particularly so when the one considers that the mintage is divided between the regular issue and the inverted date coins. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports note that this coin is the sole AU58, with a single coin graded higher, that well above the pack as MS64.
