Description:
Wonderful 865 Over Inverted 186
1865-S Eagle, Fine 12
1865-S $10 865 Over Inverted 186 Fine 12 NGC. An important example of the 1865 over Inverted Date eagle that was struck in San Francisco. At the time, three-digit logotypes were used, with the final date digit added with a separate punch. The engraver accidentally punched the three digits upside down and then went back to correct his error, leaving a spectacular variety for collectors today. Although well worn, this wonderful green-gold eagle has smooth, mark-free surfaces and presents exceptional quality for the assigned grade. A popular variety listed in the Guide Book; although the overdate is more common than the Normal Date variant of the issue, both see intense collector pressure.
From The Kiawah Collection.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 28ED, PCGS# 8643)
