Description

1866-S Motto Ten, AU55
Unknown in Mint State

1866-S $10 Motto AU55 NGC. The new With Motto reverse design was introduced in 1866, with a limited production of 11,500 eagles. Choice AU examples are conditionally rare and enjoy considerable demand among specialists. All of the San Francisco gold coinage from this period combined limited mintages and extensive circulation, with few high grade survivors. In fact, the average certified grade for this issue is just XF45, and the present specimen far exceeds that level. The combined population at NGC and PCGS is just 10 pieces, with only four finer, all graded AU58. There has never been a Mint State 1866-S Motto ten certified. This specimen combines orange-gold luster with dark toning at the upper obverse. The surfaces display nearly full luster with only a few scattered marks. Census: 9 in 55, 2 finer (8/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 53FR, PCGS# 8650)
