Description:
Momentous 1865-S Eagle, AU53
1866-S $10 No Motto AU53 NGC. This S-mint No Motto issue is among the rarest in the entire Liberty eagle series, surpassed only by the 1864-S and the legendary 1875. In the roughly 20 years of operation of NGC and PCGS, both services together have certified four pieces in this grade (all at NGC), with 10 higher (seven at NGC, three at PCGS), some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions (3/06). The peripheral strike on the obverse is somewhat weak on this coin, as only five of the 13 stars can truly be seen to have significant central radial detail present. The central strike on the reverse, however, as well as the reverse periphery, is well executed, surprisingly so, showing a level of detail that is considerably better than expected. The color is a delectable apricot-gold on both sides, and the abrasions visible are consistent with the grade. A pedigree identifier is a nearly horizontal short scrape on Liberty's neck, just below the jawline. A momentous opportunity presents itself here, and the bidding should be ferocious in this hot market.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 264H, PCGS# 8644)
