Description:
Near-Mint 1866-S No Motto--The Finest Known Example
1866-S No Motto AU 58 PCGS. This is a coin that combines absolute rarity that is recognized even beyond gold specialists with unsurpassable condition. According to Akers' auction survey done fifteen years ago, he ranked the '66-S No Motto as third in rarity according to frequency of appearance at auction, trailing only the 1875 and 1864-S. No AU coins were recorded in his comprehensive survey. This is the only AU 58 certified by PCGS (7/95), and while the NGC Census Report (7/95) shows an AU 58 graded also, it is actually this same coin. Just a shade or two lighter than the XF 45 coin above and a bit brighter overall as well, the surfaces show noticeable bits of mint luster around the devices. Rather sharply struck for the issue, the only weakness being that several of the peripheral stars are flat or show weakened radial details. For pedigree purposes, the most obvious flaws are a short nick on the face of Liberty in front of the ear lobe, and a scrape in the field above and to the right of the D in TEN D. (NGC ID# 264H, PCGS# 8644)
