Description:
PCGS 1867-S AU 53. An extremely rare With Motto ten whose mintage of only 9,000 pieces goes a long way toward explaining the rarity of this issue. This issue is such a dramatic condition rarity that when Akers compiled and wrote his book on the ten-dollar series, he made the statement that he had never seen a '67-S that graded a full XF. No mint state pieces have been certified by either of the major services, and there are only two coins that grade higher than this piece--an AU 55 by both PCGS and NGC. There is a slight loss of highpoint detail on the obverse of this coin, and the surfaces overall display a rich reddish-orange coloration that is most appealing. There are a couple of more noticeable abrasions that might be used for pedigree purposes: a long, thin, curving scratch in the left obverse field, and a couple of short marks punctuate the lower half of the face of Liberty. Trends $9,750 in AU 50. (NGC ID# 264M, PCGS# 8652)
