Conditionally Elusive 1867-S Eagle--Third Finest Certified (AU 50)1867-S AU 50 PCGS. An extremely rare With Motto ten whose mintage of only 9,000 pieces goes a long way toward explaining the rarity of this issue. It is such a dramatic condition rarity that when Akers compiled and wrote his book on the ten-dollar series, he made the statement that he had never seen a '67-S that graded full XF. He ranked it as the sixth rarest issue in the entire series by frequency of appearance in public auctions. Since that time a few higher grade pieces have appeared. This coin is tied for the third finest certified with the finest known an AU 55. The reddish tinted surfaces retain noticeable portions of mint frost in the more protected areas, and the devices are generally well struck. In the future this coin may be distinguished from its peers by the presence of several small grease stains that were struck into the reverse at the time of manufacture in the area of the F in OF and below the end of the scroll.
