Location: Long Beach, CA
Description:
Elusive AU 55 1867-S Eagle, Tied for Finest Graded
1867-S AU 55 PCGS. Not only is the '67-S a dramatic condition rarity from a total production of just 9,000 coins, but Akers ranked it as the sixth rarest issue in the entire series by frequency of appearance in public auctions. This example is tied for the finest certified with two other pieces. The reddish tinted surfaces retain noticeable portions of mint frost in the more protected areas, and the devices are generally well struck. In the future this coin may be distinguished from its peers by the presence of several small grease stains that were struck into the reverse at the time of manufacture in the area of the F in OF and below the end of the scroll. Population: 2 in 55 (1 at NGC), none finer (12/98). (NGC ID# 264M, PCGS# 8652)
