Attractive Near-Mint 1868 Ten Dollar1868 $10 AU58 NGC. While not as rare as either the 1866 or the 1867, the 1868 eagle is a scarce issue that compares favorably with the 1857, 1859, 1860, and 1862. The typically encountered grade is either VF or XF and Breen (1988) states that the issue is "prohibitively rare above XF." The reddish-gold surfaces exhibit remnants of the prooflike finish at select angles. As befits the grade, there are a number of small abrasions on both sides, but we stress that none of these features are worthy of individual concern. This is an attractive circulated coin and one of only 10,655 pieces produced.(#8653)(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 264N, PCGS# 8653)
