Conditionally Rare 1868-S Ten Dollar1868-S $10 AU55 PCGS. Except for 1875, the San Francisco Mint struck Eagles every year between 1854 and 1889. However, mintages were very low between 1855 and 1878, and usually did not reach 20,000 pieces. The 1868-S is a typically rare issue, only 13,500 pieces were struck, none of which have been certified in Mint State by either NGC or PCGS. No one collected Eagles by date and mintmark in the old west, where such pieces were strictly regarded as bullion until the next century. This pleasing piece has bright golden color, a good strike, and no obtrusive bagmarks. Population: 10 in 55, just 2 AU58s are finer (7/05).(#8654) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 264P, PCGS# 8654)
