Description:
Difficult Choice AU 1869 Eagle
1869 $10 AU55 NGC. After 1861, the Philadelphia Mint struck only minimal quantities of Eagles, not surpassing 11,000 pieces again until 1874. The mintage of the 1869 was even lower than usual, just 1,830 pieces were coined, not counting an additional 25 proofs. Too costly for collectors to set aside as souvenirs, only three pieces have been certified as Mint State by NGC and PCGS combined. Thus, AU examples are the finest practically obtainable. The present piece has ample prooflike luster within recessed areas, and although small contact marks are distributed, there are no singularly obtrusive marks. Census: 8 in 55, 6 finer (11/05).
