Rarely Seen 1869 Ten, Choice XF Condition1869 $10 XF45 NGC. The 1869 ten dollar is a very scarce and significant coin with only 1,830 pieces produced. It is seldom located above the XF level, which means it is also one of the most significant condition rarities in the series as well. This coin was previously offered in our 1995 October Long Beach Sale, a sale that included the outstanding collection of Warren Miller's tens. As a result of the consignment of his collection we also received two other 1869 tens to that sale, making an unprecedented three examples offered in one auction. The coin was described in that sale eight years ago as, "With all known examples of this rare date, the fields show evidence of heavy die polish and subsequent prooflike mirroring. Even after 15 points of wear the reflectivity is still apparent. Otherwise, the surfaces are light in color with numerous abrasions scattered about. The most obvious marks are a couple of scratches in the field above the head of Liberty, a tiny darker spot of color above the 8 in the date, and a long grease stain (as struck) in the left reverse field."
