Description

Very Rare, Low Mintage 1872 Eagle, MS62

1872 $10 MS62 PCGS. Among Philadelphia Mint issues, only the 1875 and 1873 are scarcer than the 1872 Eagle. A paltry mintage of 1,650 pieces accounts for this issue's extreme rarity as well as its condition rarity. Only five pieces have been certified in all grades of Uncirculated by both of the major services (1/03). As with the other (very few other) high grade examples we have seen of this issue, the fields have a confirmed reflectivity, due no doubt to the short striking period for business strikes and the subsequent brightness that remained on the dies from the initial die polishing before the first coin was struck. Fully struck throughout, the surfaces display a light, even reddish patina over each side and the devices have an overlay of light mint frost. Lightly abraded on each side, but we do not see any marks that could be used as reliable pedigree identifiers. (NGC ID# 264Z, PCGS# 8663)
