Description

The Finest Known 1872 Eagle

1872 MS 64 PCGS. An extremely rare ten-dollar with a mintage of only 1,620 pieces. Breen estimates that only 10 to 12 business strikes exist, most of which are in low grades. Surviving business strikes and proofs are of approximate rarity with only 30 proofs originally struck. This piece is unquestionably the finest known example of this highly respected date. No business strikes were included in either the Kaufman or Norweb sales and both the Garrett and the Eliasberg coins were proofs. This is a deeply mirrored prooflike, but is not to be confused with a proof as the diagnostics are different for each. However, the devices are well frosted, producing the highly desirable two-tone cameo effect. Rich reddish patina is spread over each side with a darker coppery colored spot on the upper portion of the truncation of the bust of Liberty. Astonishing quality for this rare, low mintage issue. (NGC ID# 264Z, PCGS# 8663)
