Description:
NGC 1872 AU 50. Extremely rare in all grades, the 1872 eagle is of great importance to collectors of this popular series. Its original mintage of only 1,650 pieces and subsequent unavailability in all grades elevates it to a level of rarity along with other famous issues, such as the 1858, 1863, 1876, and 1877. Only the 1875 and 1873 are unquestionably rarer. At the AU 50 level, this is a mid-range condition census coin, being bested only by two MS coins. The surfaces of this coin are rather extensively marked, therefore subduing the considerable reflectivity seen in the fields. Rich orange-gold color and reasonably well struck throughout. Trends $19,000 (12/14). (NGC ID# 264Z, PCGS# 8663)
