The Finest Known 1872-CC Eagle/Recently Discovered in a Brazilian Collection/The First Time Offered At Public Auction
1872-CC AU 55 PCGS. When one considers both condition as well as absolute rarity, the '72-CC eagle ranks high on both lists in the ten-dollar Liberty series. Only 5,500 pieces were struck and the few survivors are almost always heavily worn, to the point where only one other AU piece is reported (7/95), that being an NGC AU 50. This is the #1 coin listed on the Winters-Cutler condition census.
A rather interesting story surrounds the purchase of this coin. Several years ago Win Carner attended a coin show "somewhere in the South." An elderly lady brought this coin into the show and she found her way to his table. She was a widow and had returned to the States after living in Brazil for almost forty years. Her husband had purchased the piece in the 1940s and kept it in his collection. After his death, she had returned to the United States to sell his coins and other valuables. As it turned out this piece is the finest known 1872-CC ten and had been completely forgotten by the numismatic community for more than forty years. To our knowledge this is the first time it has been offered for sale in public auction, at least the first time since the 1940s. The coin is sharply struck except on the hair curls around the face of Liberty. The bright orange-gold surfaces are minimally abraded and show generous portions of mint luster around the devices. The most noticeable mark is a thin scratch between stars 10 and 11. A rare opportunity to acquire this finest known example of the key 1872-CC issue. (NGC ID# 2652, PCGS# 8664)
