Description:
Finest Certified 1872-S Eagle, MS61 NGC
1872-S $10 MS61 NGC. A conditionally rare frontier era S-mint Eagle from an original mintage of a mere 17,300 pieces, the present piece is the finest of just two 1872-S Tens certified at the Mint State level (the other being an NGC MS60). This important example is atypically bold and there are no obtrusive contact marks, although a wispy pinscratch is noted near Liberty's ear. Both sides display bright satiny luster and a touch of coppery-orange patina at the borders. All San Francisco Mint Eagles between 1857 and 1877 are extremely rare in Uncirculated grades, and the 1872-S is no exception. Population: 1 in 61, none finer (7/04).(#8665) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2653, PCGS# 8665)
