Elusive 1873 Eagle, AU50 PCGS1873 $10 Closed 3 AU50 PCGS. One of several Philadelphia Mint issues from the 1870s with extremely low mintages, a scant 800 business strikes left the dies, in addition to a mere 25 proofs. There are relatively few known specimens in any condition, perhaps 12 to 15 business strikes and 7 or 8 proofs. Most of the circulation strikes grade no higher than XF. The AU50 specimen we see here displays bright honey-gold patina and traces of luster in the protected areas. The design features show nice definition, though the hair over Liberty's ear is a tad soft. Scattered light abrasions are noted over each side. Population: 1 in 50, 9 finer (10/05).(#8666) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2654, PCGS# 8666)
