Description

Business Strike 1875 Ten--The Rarest Liberty Eagle

1875 $10 AU53 NGC. This issue's original mintage of 100 business strikes is the lowest in the entire Liberty Eagle series, and the extent population is a mere 5-6 coins. A lone MS62 NGC specimen is the only certified Mint State representative, followed in terms of technical quality by a group of three AU53 NGC and PCGS specimens (5/01). We suspect that at least one of these AU53 entries represents a resubmission, but such facts are trivial when the issue in question is a legendary rarity such as the 1875 Eagle. We last offered a business strike survivor (an AU50 PCGS coin) as lot 7338 in our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale (where it realized $46,000). The present specimen is much nicer than that coin, especially in terms of surface preservation. True, there are numerous scattered abrasions on both sides, but neither the obverse nor the reverse are marred by sizeable handling marks. Traces of a prooflike finish sparkle at certain angles, the devices retain bold striking definition throughout. A reddish-gold example, and a highlight of the Genaitis Collection. Accompanied by PCGS insert 3682287 where the grade is also given as AU53.
From the Genaitis Collection of 1875 Coinage. (NGC ID# 265A, PCGS# 8672)
