Description:
Impressive AU 1876 Gold Eagle Rarity
1876 $10 AU50 PCGS. While the mintage may not be as spectacularly low as its better known 1875 predecessor, the 1876 has a scant production of just 732 pieces, which combines both proofs and commercial strikes. Despite the extremely low mintage, contemporary collector demand was satisfied by the few proofs, and the business strikes entered circulation. Neither PCGS nor NGC has certified an example as Mint State, and only a small percentage of the original mintage has survived in any condition. The present piece is boldly struck and has rich orange toning. The sharpness is appropriate for a higher grade, although wispy slide marks accompany the fields and portrait. Population: 11 in 50, 7 finer (7/06).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 265C, PCGS# 8674)
